Why play is essential component for Preschool Environment?

Untitled-1

Play is an important component to develop a positive human development. This positive development nurtures the child to improve his confidence level in his skills and abilities. Creativity and innovation are too vital concepts that can be indulged in this fantasy play. Kids tend to imagine many things and correlate them with the environment they are in. Besides having fun, children learn a lot from playing. It enhances the child?s social, intellectual, mental and physical development. A self initiated free play has a wider scope to develop the creativity than that of the structured environment. Ideally children need about an hour of outdoor play every day.

Increase the opportunities for children to find friends and peers to play with. With each age group ensure that the children have age appropriate toys and tools to play with. Play is self education: it enhances the use of language, facilitates emotional expression, and develops fantasy and therefore creativity and divergent thinking. Play leads to healthy, moral, cognitive, and physical and socials development. It is therefore our primary responsibility to provide appropriate opportunity for play to help them develop and also to enjoy the process of development

Kids take different roles while at play. They create their own ideas about the world and try to communicate them with others. When they pretend to play, they take up different roles like that of being a parent, a doctor, a teacher, etc. A kid can gain the best out from an environment that is open ended and has a wider space to think and process them. Kids learn to make decisions based on the situations at play and engage in finding out alternatives to finish their task successfully. They set their own rules to achieve the task. This helps them to develop their self interest at an early age and try to manipulate their environment to support their play. They learn to handle and control their emotion and express their needs clearly. They also learn to share their things with their friends and will learn to get along with the kids very easily.

Between the ages of 2 and 7 years children live and play and fantasy. They often act out what they see their parents, teachers or peers doing and learn a lot of their skills then. Many of our traditional stories and games were in fact designed to help our children develop a healthy personality. For example, when children heard the story of the ?thirsty crow?, they learnt the importance of problem solving and to look for options to fix things instead of quitting and press a restart button or when they played with the utensils they learnt about the effort the family was putting in to get each meal. Children found and expressed the creativity within them by creating new things to play with, because in the age of fantasy anything is possible. Every day issues and problems that children were unable to deal with were acted out in the play situation and children found ways to deal with a stressful situation. For example, if the child was taken to a doctor for vaccination, they came back and replayed the things that happened in the hospital with their toys and peers and made sense of the incident, dealt with the fear by expressing them over and again and also found ways to cope with it by making the ?doll? become braver to reach out to the adult for comfort. Children made sense of the world through play, stories and by using fantasy effectively to cope with situations. Kids acting out of stories which involve multiple perspectives and the playful manipulation of ideas and emotions that reflect a critical feature of the child?s cognitive and social development.

At the age of 2.5, kids are sent to play schools. This is the best place where they get a chance to mingle with new friends and a new environment. This will help the kid to get along with new environments, adjust with their friends, to be more expressive and communicate with their friends. They also pretend to play the role of their teachers and friends. They learn new things in the play school which will help them to develop their creativity and will be a kick start to go to school without any reluctance.
